HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR GUITAR PICK - WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU SPEND YOUR BUCKS
Electric guitar picks come in many different shapes, sizes and materials. How do you choose the right one for you? How does it change the sound of your electric guitar? How do you know which one to buy? This guide will answer all these questions and more!
HOW TO CHOOSE THE MATERIAL
There are many types of materials that can be used to make electric guitar picks. How you choose the material will depend on how it changes your sound, durability and comfort while playing.
Let’s start with size. How big should an electric guitar pick be?
Well this depends entirely on what type of music you play!
If you play jazz-rock fusion then a small thin pick would most definitely work for you but if you’re more into hard rock or metal then I recommend using something slightly larger so that when striking each note cleanly there is no risk of slippage due to its weight difference in comparison with smaller sized plastic alternatives. The width also makes a difference because depending on whether they are thinner or thicker, your sound can vary. Thinner picks will make a brighter and crisper tone while thicker ones will produce a deeper, fuller sound.
THE DURABILITY OF THE GUITAR PICK
When choosing the material for your guitar pick you have to take into consideration how durable it is because if its very fragile then after one performance it might break or split making it useless until you go out and buy another one again! How much money do you want to spend on guitar picks? Well that’s up to you but I recommend going with something in between so that they don’t wear down too quickly nor are they expensive enough where replacing them would be crippling financially. One of my favorite materials when looking for durability is nylon as well has being able to offer both comfortability and ease of use. Some of my personal recommendations include Dunlop Jazz III Nylon Picks which come in either black or clear plastic material that is very durable while also being comfortable enough to play without any irritation on your finger tips.
